  • AOII and Arthritis

    Our Philanthropy

Alpha Omicron Pi's International Philanthropy is Arthritis Research & Education. Our chapter helps raise funds and awareness to support Arthritis, Juvenile Arthritis and related diseases. Since 1967 when we adopted Arthritis Research & Education as our international philanthropy, over one million dollars has been raised by AOIIs to help researchers find a cure for this crippling disease that, so often targets women as its victims. Each year the Chi Psi Chapter of AOII raises close to 10,000 dollars for this cause through our annual event, Mr. Fraternity, and other events we do throughout the year!

  • More About Arthritis

Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus and osteoporosis are just a few of the various forms of arthritis and related conditions that are more prevalent in women. The term "arthritis" encompasses more than 100 diseases and conditions that affect joints, the surrounding tissues and other connective tissues. Arthritis can cause mild to severe pain in the joints, as well as joint tenderness and swelling. Some of the diseases also can affect other parts of the body, including the skin and internal organs.

  • Did you know?

    • For every 3 American adults, one has some type of arthritis or chronic joint symptoms. This is equal to nearly 70 million people.
    • 41 million of those affected are women.
    • For every 4 people affected by the most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis, 3 are women.
    • For every 10 people who have lupus, 9 are women.
    • 71% of all cases of Rheumatoid Arthritis are women- 1.5 million of them

How can you help prevent arthritis?

    • Maintain a well-balanced and healthy diet.

    • Make sure you get your vitamins.

    • Create and do a regular exercise routine.

    • Contribute to AOII's philanthropy, of course!

  • Philanthropy Events

AOIIs are very philanthropic! We love to contribute our time to various events like bake sales, canned food drives, helping out at the homeless shelter, and our annual philanthropy event, Mr. Fraternity. Our sisters have fun while sharing their friendship and love through community service. Here are some events we participate in:

    AOII Goes Blue for Arthritis!

Centered around the date of March 4th, all AOIIs are encouraged to join together to set aside some time to “march forth” in some capacity of serving others for the International Day of Service. This year, AOIIs collected loose change in the University Union that was donated to Arthritis Research!

    Arthritis Walk

The Arthritis Walk is the Arthritis Foundation’s annual nationwide signature event that raises funds and awareness to fight arthritis, the nation’s most common cause of disability. The Arthritis Walk kicks off in May during National Arthritis Month in more than 250 communities nationwide to fund arthritis research, health education and government advocacy initiatives. Last year, our girls and their parents walked together during Parent's Weekend in support of Arthritis awareness.
